Recreational Vehicle Insurance FAQs

Does my auto or homeowners policy already cover my boat, RV, or ATV?

Almost never, at least not fully. Standard auto and homeowners policies are built around cars and houses, not recreational vehicles, so boats, RVs, snowmobiles, and off-road vehicles typically need their own dedicated recreational vehicle policy. A homeowners policy may offer very limited coverage for a small trailer or non-motorized watercraft sitting on your property, but it stops well short of what’s needed once that vehicle is actually in use.

What does boat insurance actually cover?

A dedicated boat or watercraft policy generally covers the hull, motor, and trailer, plus liability if you injure someone or damage property while on the water. Depending on the carrier, it can also include on-water towing and breakdown assistance, fuel spill liability, and coverage for permanently attached equipment. This applies whether you’re running a pontoon on Flathead Lake or a fishing boat on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Do I need insurance for a jet ski?

Yes — jet skis and other personal watercraft carry real liability exposure, since they’re fast, maneuverable, and often shared among multiple riders in crowded water. A dedicated policy covers physical damage to the jet ski along with liability if you’re involved in an accident, and many carriers also offer coverage for towing and roadside assistance to and from the water.

How is RV insurance different from regular auto insurance?

RV insurance is built around vehicles that are part transportation and part home, so coverage typically extends beyond the vehicle itself to include permanently attached equipment, awnings, and personal belongings kept inside. How your policy is structured also depends heavily on use — an RV driven occasionally on weekend trips is underwritten differently than one used as a part-time or full-time residence, so it’s worth telling your agent exactly how you use it.

Is my travel trailer or camper covered under my auto policy since I tow it with my truck?

No — a towable travel trailer, fifth-wheel, or pop-up camper generally needs its own policy separate from the vehicle towing it. Your auto policy may extend limited liability while it’s being towed, but physical damage to the trailer itself and its contents typically isn’t covered without a dedicated RV or trailer policy.

Do I need insurance for my ATV, UTV, or side-by-side?

In many cases it isn’t legally required on your own property, but it’s often required to ride on public trails, at organized events, or on private trail systems and OHV parks across Montana and Idaho. Beyond any requirement, off-road vehicle insurance protects you financially if the vehicle is damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident on the trail — situations a homeowners policy generally won’t cover.

What's the difference between insuring an ATV for recreational use versus work use?

Recreational and work-use policies are underwritten differently because the risk profile changes — a UTV used occasionally on weekend trail rides carries different exposure than one used daily on a ranch or job site. Telling your agent exactly how the vehicle is used helps make sure you’re not paying for coverage you don’t need, or worse, missing coverage you do.

Does snowmobile insurance cover trail riding accidents?

Yes, a dedicated snowmobile policy typically covers physical damage to the machine along with liability if you cause an accident or injury while riding, whether that’s on groomed trails or backcountry terrain. Given how much snowmobile traffic moves through our Montana and North Idaho service areas each winter, this is one of the most commonly underinsured recreational vehicles we see.

Can I bundle multiple recreational vehicles under one policy?

In many cases, yes. If you own several recreational vehicles — say, a boat, a snowmobile, and a couple of ATVs — some carriers allow you to package them together, which often brings down the overall cost compared to insuring each one separately. We can review what you own and see which of our carriers offers the best combined rate.

Will my recreational vehicle insurance follow me if I ride or boat out of state?

Most recreational vehicle policies extend coverage while traveling out of state, but specifics — especially around liability limits and any state-specific requirements — can vary by carrier and vehicle type. If you regularly trailer a boat or RV across state lines, it’s worth confirming the details with us before you go.

What happens if my boat, RV, or ATV is damaged by something other than an accident, like a storm or theft?

That’s where comprehensive-style coverage on a dedicated recreational vehicle policy comes in — it addresses damage from causes other than a collision, such as severe weather, fire, vandalism, or theft. This is exactly the kind of protection a basic auto or homeowners policy typically won’t extend to a boat, RV, or off-road vehicle.

Why should I use an independent agent for recreational vehicle insurance instead of going directly through one company?

A direct insurer can only offer their own coverage at their own price, and not every carrier writes every type of recreational vehicle well. As an independent agency serving Montana and Idaho, we compare your boat, RV, snowmobile, or off-road vehicle across multiple carriers to find the policy that actually fits how you use it — and we’re the ones who advocate for you if a claim gets complicated.
